Curing chambers: the documents to ask for before you buy

The curing chamber is the only pressure vessel on a retreading line. It runs hot and under pressure, in a workshop, every day. Yet the first question most buyers ask is the price, and the question about certificates comes last, if at all. That order is backwards.

**Three things to establish before you buy:**

**1. Who actually built the shell, and are they licensed?** In China, pressure vessel manufacturing is a licensed activity. Many equipment makers - ourselves included - do not hold a pressure vessel manufacturing licence and have the shell built by a licensed manufacturer. That is normal and correct practice. What matters is that you can ask and get a straight answer: which licensed factory built the shell, and what is the licence number. Evasiveness here is the warning sign.

**2. What paperwork ships with the vessel?** A properly supplied chamber should come with: - Pressure vessel product certificate - Special equipment manufacturing supervision inspection certificate, issued by a third-party inspection institute - A TS mark on the nameplate - The hydrostatic test report and radiographic inspection records for that specific vessel

These documents are issued per unit. The serial numbers must match the chamber you are buying. A generic sample, or paperwork carrying a different serial number, is worth nothing.

**3. Shell material.** The shell should be pressure vessel steel - ours is Q345R. Ordinary carbon steel can be welded into something that looks the same and holds pressure at first; the difference shows up over years of pressure and temperature cycling.

**What does your own country require?** This varies widely. Some countries re-inspect imported pressure vessels locally, some expect ASME or PED documentation, others only want a certificate of origin and a packing list. Find out before you order - it is far easier than chasing paperwork after the container lands. **One last point.** A cheaper chamber is usually cheaper because of exactly these items: ordinary steel, no third-party inspection, no documents. That saving comes back to you at the first local inspection, or the first incident.
