How many times can a tyre be retreaded? Casing life and the economics of retreading
“How many more times can this casing be retreaded?” It's a calculation almost every retread shop and fleet makes. The answer comes down to one thing — the health of the casing (the cord-ply body).
What wears out on a tyre is mainly the tread rubber; the casing still has life left as long as it has no hidden damage and the cords are intact. A good, well-maintained TBR truck casing can usually be retreaded 1–3 times; OTR (off-the-road) casings, being thick and high-value, are often worth retreading even more. Over its life, a good casing can deliver 3–6 times the mileage of a single new tyre.
Why do so many retread? Because it's cheaper. Retreading a tyre costs only about 30–50% of a new one, while delivering mileage and grip close to new. For fleets and hauliers, that's real money saved — and for the circular economy, every casing reused means far less scrap rubber.
But how many times you can retread, and how well, depends on the equipment. Inspection machines screen out casings that can't be retreaded, buffing machines cut a precise radius, and curing chambers bond the new tread firmly — every step in place is what lifts your yield and retread count.
