What is a retreading envelope, and why cold retreading needs it

Newcomers to cold retreading often ask: why not just put the tyre straight into the chamber after applying the tread? What is the rubber sleeve for?

That sleeve is the envelope, and in cold retreading it does two jobs: sealing and transmitting pressure. After the precured tread is applied, the tyre is fitted with an envelope and vacuum is drawn, pulling all the air out from between tread and casing. Inside the chamber, chamber pressure then presses evenly on the whole tread through the envelope, holding it firmly against the casing while the cushion gum bonds under heat.

What happens without one? Air is not fully evacuated, so bubbles form in the bond line; pressure is not even, so the tread does not seat properly - and the retread can delaminate after some service. So although the envelope is a consumable, it directly determines finished quality.

A few practical points: avoid cutting it on sharp objects when fitting and removing - an envelope spreader is easier on both the operator and the envelope; check for splits after each use and replace damaged ones promptly; and match the size to the tyre, since too large or too small compromises the seal.
