Choosing a tyre buffing machine: manual, standard or CNC

Choosing a tyre buffing machine: manual, standard or CNC

Buffing is the step that decides your reject rate. Buff too deep and you damage the casing cords; too shallow and the tread will not bond; get the crown radius wrong and the retread wears unevenly. So the question comes up on every line we quote: do I need a CNC buffer?

**Three configurations.**

**Manual.** The operator feeds the tool in by hand and judges by eye. Cheapest machine, but consistency depends entirely on the person. Fine while your experienced operator is there; a problem the day he is not.

**Standard gantry.** Our YTD-03 sits here. The gantry frame spreads the load, so the stroke stays stable and the crown radius can be adjusted while buffing without stopping the machine. About 3 minutes per truck/bus casing; tyres up to 1.2 m outer diameter and 400 mm tread width, rims 16"-24.5"; 21 kW main motor plus a 5.5 kW dust extraction fan, rubber dust bagged automatically; about 1,400 kg. This is the workhorse in most plants.

**CNC (radius template).** The YTD-02 follows a radius template, holding buffing depth to millimetre level. The gain is not speed, it is repeatability — every casing comes out with the same radius, and a new operator can run it without years of feel. It costs noticeably more than the standard machine.

**How to choose — three questions:**

1. **How many tyres a day?** Up to about 60, one standard machine is enough (at 3 minutes per tyre over a 9-hour shift, with 25% slack, you still have room). 2. **How stable is your labour?** If you hire often and train new people, the CNC machine locks the quality in; over a few years that usually costs less than the rework it prevents. 3. **Which tyres?** Earthmover (OTR) tyres need a dedicated machine — YTD-G1 (inflatable type) or YTD-G2 (gantry type), about 2.5 t. For truck and bus tyres either of the first two works.

**One thing buyers often overlook: dust.** Buffing produces a lot of rubber dust. Without extraction it coats the whole workshop within months, and your operators breathe it. Our machines come with extraction built in and bag the dust automatically, so no separate collector is needed.
