YTON: An Overview of Tire Retreading Equipment, Technology & Application
Tire retreading is the process of renewing a worn tread so a sound casing can go back into service. A complete line links, step by step, the machines for inspection, buffing, repair, cementing, tread building, enveloping, curing, and final inspection and conveying. Since its first line in 2000, YTON (Mingtong Machinery) has focused for years on designing, building, and exporting this kind of equipment.
Retreading falls into two main methods: hot and cold. Hot retreading is mostly for bias tires; cold (pre-cure) retreading is mainly for radials, where the tread is cured in a dedicated chamber under controlled temperature and pressure. In recent years the industry has shifted from hot-retreading bias tires to predominantly pre-cure cold retreading of radials, and the equipment has evolved accordingly.
Key equipment steps include: casing inspection (by tapping and listening, or with a tire spreader and a spark tester), buffing (economy, standard, or CNC, with cyclone extraction), repair and cementing, tread building and pressing, and enveloping and curing. Curing is the most sensitive to temperature and pressure — the cushion gum must react at around 115°C, held to about ±1°C, under a stable pressure difference (about 8 kg in the tube, 4 kg in the envelope, 6 kg in the chamber, to within 0.1–0.5 kg); whether these stay stable decides blistering and separation, so a chamber's temperature-pressure control matters most.
In application, retreading is now widely used on bus and heavy-freight tires, with OTR and some passenger-car retreading advancing too. The economics stand out: a retread typically costs only 30–50% of a new tire, while a truck casing lasts about 3 times its tread life and can be retreaded several times. For a plant, choosing the right equipment is only the first step; stable process and skilled operators matter just as much — YTON delivers training and installation guidance with each line to help customers reach production quickly.
